How to choose nutritious foods to donate to a food bank

Did you know that lower income families have more trouble putting healthy, nutritious food on the table? High-calorie and low-nutrient foods are often more accessible and affordable.

When donating canned goods  as part of a food drive, people will often give and processed food. It should however be noted that staples are much more in demand. Protein-rich foods are a more suitable choice.

Here is a list of foods you may wish to donate:

  • Legumes (canned): lentils, chick peas, red beans, etc.
  • Fish and seafood (canned): rich in omega-3 fats, essential for the optimal development of children
  • Peanut or almond butter
  • Basic ingredients : oil (canola or olive), flour, sugar, vanilla, vinegar, spices
  • Fruit (canned) or applesauce without added sugar
  • Whole grains: quinoa, wild or brown rice, whole wheat pasta, oatmeal
  • Healthy crackers: Triscuit, Ryvita, Wasa, rice cakes
  • Milk Grand Pré or fortified soya beverages
  • Breakfast cereal low in sugar such as Cheerios, Weetabix, Shredded Wheat, All Bran
  • Infant formula
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Popular items: honey, maple syrup, chocolate chip

You don’t have to limit yourself to food donations. It’s possible to include hygiene products (soap, shampoo, lotion, razor, sanitary pads) and cleaning products. Products for babies are also welcome. You can also offer cash donations that the agency can use to purchase certain items to better supplement baskets.

In the month leading up to the holiday season, all donations are appreciated. Think of the quality items that you would like to receive and be generous!
