Top Tips for Living with Crohn’s Disease

Thankfully today there are numerous treatment options that allow for anyone who is living with Crohn’s to live with it. However, for some, getting the medical treatment under control is only half the story; for those who become all consumed from a psychological standpoint, not only can the condition worsen, it can have serious impact on how one lives their day to day life.  That’s why coping strategies can act to inoculate you against some of the realities of this disease.

So what can you do in an effort to cope with Crohn’s disease?

Here is a list of coping strategies that may serve to support someone struggling with Crohn’s disease:

1. Create a relationship with your doctor – information is power. Therefore, gather as much information as you can so that you empower yourself about the most effective ways to address this disease. Don’t hold back your concerns, it’s not the time to be shy or embarrassed. Medical professionals are well placed to help you understand what is going on inside your body and how to best treat your condition.

When those close to you know that something is going on with someone they care about they want to help, support, but often don’t know how…here’s your chance to let them know what and how you need.

While a little stress in one’s life can help to mobilize them to move forward, stress in many situations can also serve to exacerbate it. With Crohn’s disease, stress can prove to be more harmful as it can add to the symptoms. There are a number of support services available that can prove beneficial.

 

4. Be an active participant in your treatment. While you can’t always control the flair ups of the condition, you can do whatever it takes to reduce them. You can’t control the flair ups, but you can control what you do about them.

5. Don’t become a recluse… just because you have Crohn’s doesn’t mean you can’t go out, enjoy, socialize…it’s not having the illness that is isolating, it’s what you chose to do because of the illness that is!

6. Grief shared is grief diminished….it’s ok to ask for help. Being diagnosed with a life long illness can be very isolating – don’t be afraid to seek help from a mental health professional.  Finding support from a therapist who you feel comfortable with allows you to confidentially share your thoughts, feelings and concerns, which in turn can serve to avoid feeling isolated, anxious, and depressed. It also helps provide you with a safe space where you can be yourself.
