Neuroproprioceptive Taping: A new trend

A new trend in taping is emerging to help provide support to injured and sore muscles, ligaments and tendons.  Neuro-proprioceptive Taping (NPT) was born in Japan in the 1970s. It gained recognition in 2008, at the Beijing Olympics where many athletes sported the famous blue, pink, black or beige tape.

Known under different brand names, one of them “K-tape”, this elastic band has several functions. First of all, this elastic

tape is designed to facilitate the body healing process by providing support and stability to the affected body part. NPT can be used during rehabilitation, with traditional physical therapy treatments and might potentially allow a faster return to activities.

NPT is made of cotton and its elastic properties mimic those of muscles. This is what differentiates it from common rigid tapes. NPT does not restrict range of motion. It is latex-free and water permeable, so it can be kept for 3 to 5 days.

Depending on the way it is applied, NPT can be beneficial for a wide variety of conditions. Its mechanical and neuro-physiological effects make it appropriate for treatment of muscular tensions, tendinitis, epicondylitis, back pain and neck pain. Furthermore, NPT can be used to optimize alignment of a painful joint such as a shoulder or patella. It can also optimize blood and lymph flow in cases of edema, bruise or bursitis, for example.
