I’ve been teaching fitness for 30 years and it always amazes me how many participants cannot be bothered to stay for a five minute stretch at the end of the class. As a massage therapist I see a lot of these same people on my table suffering from poor posture, muscle imbalances and chronic pain. My homework for these clients will inevitably include a daily stretch routine.

Stretching can help prevent injuries and falls by improving flexibility and maintaining proper muscle tone. By maintaining a healthy level of flexibility you are helping your body function at a proper range of motion. When your muscles are constricted and tight you are not able to move through a fluid, full range of motion.

Flexibility is an often forgotten, but key component in a healthy fit body. Whether you are an athlete, an occasional exerciser or your work involves repetitive or static strain on your muscles; you need to keep your joints and muscles mobile and unrestricted. This is especially true as we age, our joints will naturally become less mobile due to inflammation etc. Inactivity and muscle constraint will only make it worse.

When it comes to flexibility the expression; “if you don’t use it, you lose it” is especially true.
